Agathis Felis - Secular Witchery

About Me

Welcome to my segment of the "small web!"

I am a secular witch, which means my practice of witchcraft is not religious. I am not Wiccan, nor do I worship any deities from other pantheons as part of my witchery. I am a soft animist (credit to Alex Wrekk for that phrasing) and that informs a lot of how I see the world and my place in it.

I would mainly classify myself as a green witch at this point - I love helping things grow and I like using plants in my spells. I'm not a hedge witch, which I point out because sometimes I see "Green Witch" and "Hedge Witch" used as if they have the same meaning. My take on it is that green witches use a lot of plant energy/correspondences, and hedge witches "cross the hedge" and work in the astral. They sometimes use herbs to facilitate this, but I still think there is a space between green witches and hedge witches - that Venn diagram doesn't overlap 100%.

I enjoy cartomancy (reading different types of cards for insight and guidance). I have several decks of different types and find them useful for different things or at different times.

I grow food to eat, herbs to enhance my cooking, flowers to support pollinators, and plants to support the caterpillars that will become pollinators. I'm very fond of native plants and am always trying to cultivate more of them around my home.

I really like using colors in my magic. I will nearly always go for a colored candle when I'm casting.

I have found that using incense while working a spell enhances the efficacy, so I'm working to increase my understanding of which types of incense work best for which magical goals.

My initial plan for this stop on The Witching Hour webring is to list the books/zines I've read, provide short reviews of each, list the tarot/oracle/lenormand decks I've used, talk about my experiences with each of those, and list the vendors I get my books and supplies from.

It will be pretty basic stuff, to start with. But maybe it will help some folks. Finding a vendor who made slender candles in the colors I wanted made a difference to me, so maybe little details like that can help someone else.

We'll see what else crops up and wants to be added. If Tumblr indeeds bites it, this may be where my witchy blog comes to live in its entirety.

Vendors/Products I Can Recommend

  • Portland Button Works and Spiral House Shop
  • Most of the books listed above came from The Spiral House Shop. I've also gotten a couple of other things (a nice nickle chime candle holder). Alex ships quickly and accurately, and I've been more than happy with everything I've gotten there.
  • The Sorcerers Workbench (Etsy)
  • I have only gotten one item, but it is beautiful. I found it very easy to work with this craftperson. Fast turnaround time.
  • The Bee Man Candle Company
  • I got Bayberry candles from this shop and I loved them. They burned beautifully.
  • April In My Soul (Etsy)
  • I got some of the 100% Beeswax Thin Taper Ritual Candles and I am happy with them. I was looking for colored candles that would burn more quickly than full sized tapers or even chime candles, and these seem to fit the bill for me.
  • Crystal Crafts Hut (Etsy)
  • I got an obsidian mirror and it arrived in great condition. It was packed carefully and was exactly as pictured.

Obviously I cannot and do not make any guarantees about what someone else's experience might be. These are just the experiences I had when I ordered from these vendors/craftspersons. Oh, and I'm not getting paid for any of this - these are not affiliate links or anything like that, and I'm not getting free stuff for listing folks on this site.
